Whether you like your words on paper or screen, our summer reading challenge counts it all! Spend time every day with a book, e-book, audiobook, website, magazine, graphic novel, or newspaper and track your progress in your reading log. Weekly prizes and extra chances for special drawings will keep you on track. All finishers receive a free book and a ticket to our finisher pool party at Dolphin Cove Family Aquatic Center!
During the summer, the library will host a range of free activities for children, teens, and adults to encourage and support a love of reading. Visit our online calendar or peruse our summer newsletter to see what we have planned for the summer.
But there is also a serious side to summer reading. Research has shown that reading over the summer prevents summer reading loss, called “summer slide.” New national research from Dominican University finds that students who participate in public library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those who did not participate.
Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests, so encourage your children to wander the shelves, and let them check out materials they choose themselves. Graphic novels, audiobooks, and playaways all count in our summer reading challenge. We also have friendly, knowledgeable librarians who are happy to help children, teens and adults find reading materials to enjoy.
To register for the summer reading challenge, visit a service desk at either the Dundee Library or the Randall Oaks Library.
You will receive a reading log in which you will color one symbol for each day you read. At the end of the week, bring in your reading log to receive your weekly prize! (If you can't come into the library that week, you can get your prize the next time you come.)
Teens & Adults are invited to pick up “Recommended Read” forms at the library and fill them out to earn entries into weekly gift card drawings from local businesses.
When you complete the final week, bring your reading log into the library to receive your finishing prizes which include:

Children always have a great time at Chicago magician Scott Green’s shows, but the real magic is that adults do, too! That ability to reach all ages is what’s made Scott famous. He amazes children and adults with the same tricks, and gets everybody laughing until they’re shaking.
· A visit from special guest “Gus” from the Windy Bulls
· A children’s book sale. All books just 25¢!
