Books on TV is back! In the first installment, I talked about crime/mystery shows that are based on books. This second installment will focus on shows that are based on Young Adult books or graphic novels. One of the first things that came to my mind when writing this post was superheroes. There are a plethora of superhero graphic novels, and superhero TV shows have gotten quite popular recently with shows like The Flash, Arrow, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Supergirl, DC’S Legends of Tomorrow, and Gotham. While these are all well and good, I’d like to take a closer look at some shows that are based on other Young Adult titles.
The 100: After a nuclear apocalypse devastated Earth, the human race survived by living in a massive space station in Earth’s orbit. 97 years later, the space station begins to fail so 100 juvenile delinquents are sent to Earth to determine whether or not it is habitable once again. This show is based on the The 100 series by Kass Morgan.
The Vampire Diaries: Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is a teenage girl who falls in love with 162-year-old vampire Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Things become more complicated when Stefan’s brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), returns to wreak havoc on the town of Mystic Falls. As the brothers feud, Elena begins unraveling the other supernatural secrets of Mystic Falls. This show is based on the Vampire Diaries series by L.J. Smith.
Gossip Girl: Starring Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, and Chace Crawford, this show revolves around the lives of a group of privileged teenagers from the Upper East Side of New York. The wild romances and dark secrets in their lives cannot be hidden from Gossip Girl, the mysterious blogger who is always watching them. Gossip Girl is based on the Gossip Girl series by Cecily von Ziegesar.
The Walking Dead: After being in a coma for several months, Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes awakens to find that the world has been overrun by zombies, also known as “walkers.” He leads a group of survivors in the fight against the walkers, but finds that other survivor groups are just as much of a threat. The Walking Dead is based on the graphic novels of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard.
Pretty Little Liars: This show revolves around a clique of teenage girls who drift apart after their leader, Alison, mysteriously goes missing. One year later, the girls are reunited after they start receiving mysterious messages threatening to expose their darkest secrets. The messages are coming from someone only known as “A,” and the girls begin to suspect that it is Alison…until Alison’s body is found. Who could be sending these messages? Could Alison still be alive? Is there more to Alison’s disappearance and death than the girls realize? This show is based on the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard.
The shows and books can all be found in the library catalog. If you enjoyed one version, check out the other version and continue the adventures of your favorite characters!
