Cinco de Mayo at home Help

“Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Tuesday this year, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.”  (

In America Cinco de Mayo has also become a day when Americans enjoy a little taste of Mexican culture by enjoying some delicious Mexican food.  Unfortunately, this year we will all have to stay home and attempt to make our own tacos, carne asada or enchiladas.

Have no fear! The library has e-resources to help your at home Cinco de Mayo celebration!

Hoopla has cookbooks, children’s books, music and movies available for you to check out electronically today! We have also upped the number of checkouts on Hoopla to 10 per month. You can click the link above to go directly to the Hoopla sign in page, or from our website click on ELIBRARY, then on HOOPLA.

Hoopla is very easy to navigate, and I’ll show you how to find items using the Hoopla SEARCH bar.

The first search I did was by typing “Cinco de Mayo” in the Search bar. It gave me 45 results. A lot of them were Children’s books with the phrase “Cinco de Mayo” in the title, but further down the list there were some music options.

When I searched “Mexican Cooking” in order to find some good recipes, I found these four eBooks.

I also wanted to find a little bit more about the history of our southern neighbor, so I searched “Mexico History” and was rewarded with these four titles. I think I will start listening to the History of the Conquest of Mexico today as I work.

Finally to set the proper mood for our meal, I searched “Mexico Music” and found over 1,400 music titles that I can check out and play as we eat our meal and maybe even play a game of Loteria tonight.

Speaking of Loteria, Google has a fun online version of Loteria you can play for free. It’s a fun game to play and will help you learn some new Spanish words.

ꜟFeliz Cinco de Mayo a todos!
