Picture this book as a film: The private eye sits in his office, on the rundown side of town. A wealthy, beautiful, woman walks in. He’s unhappy about taking her on as a client. She’s unhappy about the questions she needs answered. So far, this sounds like a typical 1940s noir, but the time is 1968 and the setting is Beale Street in Memphis. Smokey Dalton is about to discover the hard truths behind the night that changed his life, because his client’s case is entangled with the 1939 Atlanta premiere of Gone with the Wind, when Smokey was 10 years old. His client has never been to Atlanta, and Smokey never wants to go back, but his journey there will send the New South crashing into the Old. This is the first book in what promises to be an excellent series.
