Are you a recent graduate trying to decide what job and career path you want to take? Have you been working for awhile and now want to change careers but aren't sure which new career you want? Are you a job seeker who just doesn't like the job options you've been looking at? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, eParachute may be super helpful for you!
Inspired by the best-selling career guide of all time, What Color is Your Parachute? by Richard Bolles, eParachute is a tool you can use for free with Brainfuse: JobNow that will help you find a career path and types of jobs that are right for you. It will do this by asking you questions about your skills, strengths, personality, interests, and more. To access eParachute, you will need to go to the Brainfuse: JobNow website through our Research page and create a free account. You can find the steps on how to do this in a previous blog post that I have written.
Once you are on the Brainfuse: JobNow website and logged in, click on "eParachute" in the "Careers" column on the right side. This will take you to the eParachute tool. Click on "Get Started" and the first thing it asks is what kind of work you find interesting or exciting. There's a text box that you can type in your answer. Below the text box, you can click where it says "Need some ideas? Click here..." to get some suggestions of types of things you can include in this section. In the text box, you have to write the thing you are interested in where it says "Title" and then give a brief reason why you're interested in that thing below that where it says "Description." Once you are finished, click on "Add Idea" and it will create a list and add the idea to it. You then have the option to keep adding more responses if you want. Once you have added as many responses as you'd like, click on "Move on" to the left of the text box to continue.
The next step deals with types of people. You are first asked to choose the type of person you identify with most. There are six choices: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Conventional, Enterprising, and Social. If you hover your cursor over each choice, you will get a description. Once you make a choice, hit "Next" and you will then be asked to choose the type you next most identify with. After your second choice, hit "Next" again and then you will choose the type you third most identify with. Finally, hit "Next" again after your third choice.
You will then see your three choices and you will be asked if you want to submit those choices or go back and re-select. If you're good with your choices, click "Submit" to move on to the next step.
In the third step, you are asked to choose fields that you love. There will be several suggested fields based on your answers from the first two parts. You can choose any fields you want and as many as you want, but you must select at least 4. The screenshot below shows a sample of the many field choices you can choose from. If you hover your cursor over a field, an "i" icon appears on the top right corner. You can hover over that icon to get more information about that field. Make your selections and then click on "Next step" to continue.
You will be shown all of the fields you selected and will be asked to confirm your choices. Click "Back" if you want to go back and change your selections. If you are good with your choices, click "Confirm" to continue.
Now eParachute will you have prioritize your favorite fields by comparing your chosen fields against each other two at a time. They will create a variety of combinations to compare. Just go through and click on which one you pefer with each pair they give you.
Once you go through the pairs of fields, you will get a prioritized list of your chosen fields with the top 3 highlighted. If you want to redo the comparison of the pairs of fields, click "Prioritize again." You can also go back to the first part where you choose your favorite fields by clicking "Redo fields." Otherwise, if you are satisfied with your prioritized list of your chosen fields, click "Go to skills" to move on to the last step.
Similar to the Fields section, in the Skills section you will be given a list of 62 skills total organized into 3 different categories. There will be some skills suggested for you based on your responses from the previous 3 steps. You can choose whichever skills you want and as many as you want, but you must choose at least 5. Again, if you hover your cursor on a skill, an "i" icon will appear and if you hover your curser over that, you can get more information about that skill. Select the skills you enjoy using and then click "Next step" when you're ready to move on.
You will now see the skills you have chosen. You will have to narrow down and choose the ones you love the most. You must choose at least 4 but no more than 10. Once you make your choices, click on "Next step."
Like with the Fields in the previous step, you will now have to prioritize your favorite Skills. Again, you will have to compare pairs of Skills, and eParachute will create various pairs from different combinations of the favorite Skills you have chosen. Go through and choose which skill you prefer with each pair.
Once you go through the pairs of skills, you will get a prioritized list of your chosen skills with the top 3 highlighted. If you want to redo the comparison of the pairs of skills, click "Prioritize again." You can also go back to the first part where you choose your favorite skills by clicking "Redo skills." Otherwise, if you are satisfied with your prioritized list of your chosen skills, click "Continue" to move on.
At this point, you have completed all of the steps! Once you click "Continue," you will see a screen saying "Your profile is complete!" You then have the choice to click on "Go to the Work Explorer" or "View your profile." If you click on "Go to the Work Explorer," you can see a list of jobs that eParachute has chosen for you to take a look at based on all of the information you provided in the previous steps. If you click on "View your profile," you will come to a page that shows all of the items you chose from the previous steps. You can access other information from this page as well. Lets click on "View your profile."
As I said before, once in your profile, you will see the people types, fields, and skills you have chosen. On the left hand side, you can click on a few different items to see more information. If you click on "Find Career Ideas," you can click on any of the people types, fields, and skills that you chose and then click "Suggest Ideas" to generate a list of jobs that fit with the items you have chosen. If you click on "Suggest Majors," you can see a list of college majors that might be a good fit for you, again based on the people types, fields, and skills you had chosen.
If you click on "Featured Ideas," you will see the list of jobs that eParachute has chosen as a possible match for you, based on everything you selected during those 4 steps earlier. There will be a score next to the job title, which is created by eParachute based on how many of your people types, fields, and skills the job matches with.
