Genre Guide: Romance, Take 2

Samantha's picture

Welcome to another installment in our Genre Guide series! This month is Romance, Take 2. If you haven't taken a look at our first Genre Guide: Romance, feel free to go and do so! I'll wait patiently until you come back.

Moving forward! In romance novels, the main plot focuses on the romantic relationship between a couple, and the ending must be "emotionally-satisfying and optimistic". The other elements, such as setting, storyline, and subplot, can be taken from other genres and subgenres. In this post, we are going to focus on historical romance. As a genre, historical romance is quite broad, as it most basically calls for the novel to be set in the past. It can include both literary fiction (such as Ivanhoe or Wolf Hall) as well as mass-market books (most famously of the Regency romance variety, which are set during the British Regency period from 1811–1820 or early 19th century).
