Welcome to another installment in our Genre Guide series! This post covers Young Adult, or YA literature.
YA books are typically aimed at ages 12 and up. Protagonists are figuring out who they are and coming into their own as people as they transition from a kid to an adult. Plots often revolve around firsts-- first kiss, first love, first heartbreak, etc., with plenty of angst and awkwardness thrown in the mix. YA books also delve into issues facing teens such as identity, peer pressure, bullying, eating disorders, and sexual assault. Many stories take place in a realistic, contemporary setting; other books may fall under genres that include historical, sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, steampunk, mystery, horror... or, more often, a combination of several genres. I hope to continue to delve into the YA genre on the blog and write in-depth about specific genres featured within YA... for now, here is a broad overview.
