Make and Take: Summer Programs for Patrons of All Ages

We love coming together together as a community to make and create, to learn and explore. Join us all summer long as we make crafts on the Summer Reading Challenge theme, "Read for the Win!"

Perler beads

8-bit Party (18+) Saturday, June 11, 2 p.m.

Perler Beads were created in the 1960s and are having a nostalgic resurgence among adults who grew up during the '80s and '90s. Makers will choose small, plastic cylinder beads and arrange them on a peg board to form an image; 8-bit video game characters translate very easily to this visual craft.

Tetra lamp

DIY Tetra Lamp @ Randall Oaks (18+) Wednesdays, June 22-August 31, 6 p.m. @ Randall Oaks

Randall Oaks manager Aaron will take you step by step through the process of making your very own Tetra Lamp by fashioning hexagons and pentagons together out of folded strips of cardstock. We’ll provide the cardstock along with information on how to choose your own cord, light socket and bulb.

Tetris magnets

Craft Lab: Tetris Magnets (12-18) Tuesday, June 28, 3 p.m.Thursday, July 14, 6 p.m. @ Randall Oaks

Tetris was cool in the ‘80s, and it’s still cool today. In fact it’s one of the bestselling video games of all time. To make these simple game pieces, all you need are cube beads, glue, and magnets. Teens aged 12 to 18 are welcome to register up through the day of the program.

Sewing machine

Fashion Hacking (8-12) Tuesday, June 28, 5 p.m.Tuesday, June 28, 7 p.m.

Younger patrons are invited to join us on the fourth Tuesday of every month to create new items of clothing, accessories, or home decor out of either thrifted clothes or donated fabric.

“We purchased 5 sewing machines and have used them to do 2 projects so far…they've made some great progress with the sewing machines and I think that their confidence in their abilities has really grown. The kids are so proud when they have their finished projects; it's heartwarming to see,” says Children’s Librarian Samantha.

Pacman

Craft Lab: Game Picture Frames (12-18) Tuesday, July 19, 3 p.m.Thursday, July 21, 6 p.m. @ Randall Oaks

Speaking of bestselling video games…check this out. Our Teen Librarian Danielle has the best ideas, doesn’t she? Teens will create their own customized picture frames using paint and recycled Scrabble titles in the Craft Lab on July 19 at the Dundee Library and on July 21 at Randall Oaks.

Cubs string art

Craft Lab: Sporty String Art (12-18) Tuesday, July 26, 3 p.m.Thursday, July 28, 6 p.m. @ Randall Oaks

This is the year, right? World Series here we come! Use needle, thread, cardstock, and team logos to make sports-inspired string art. Following the outline of your design, you will poke holes into the card stock, and then use needle and thread to go from point to point--there is no right or wrong way to do this!
