Miss Holmes

Enola Holmes is an upcoming 2020 British mystery film set to premier September 23rd on Netflix.  It is based on the book series of the same name by Nancy Springer.

I fell in love with Enola Holmes when I first read this series back in 2017.  She's an independent spitfire of a main character, brought up in a schockingly, un-ladylike way, by an aging mother who vanishes at the outset of the series.  Her two older brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock, don't know what to do with her, except pack her off to a finishing school.  At that point she does what many youngsters do when faced with a suffocating life that they have no control over: she runs away.  But it's not easy when her two older brothers are activly trying to hunt her down.  She always has to stay one step ahead of her enemies to keep her freedom and protect her life. Enola is on her own.  It's not easy for a young girl on the run in Victorian London.  This book series is targeted at middle grade and early YA readers.  I was beyond excited when I first heard that they were making a movie from the books, and my wait is only 2 days away now!

For another twist on the Serlock theme, I highly recommend the Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas.  This features another young heroine, whose intellect is being undermined by her overbearing father.  When she finally realizes that her father is not going to pay for college, as he had promised and that he actually intends to marry her off, Charlotte takes matters in to her own hands.  What easier way to become unmarriagebale (in society), than to be caught in flagrante delicto with a married man, by his own mother and several other well-bred ladies.   Only Charlotte doesn't realize quite how completely society will cut her off.

When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name. She’ll have help from friends new and old—a kind-hearted widow, a police inspector, and a man who has long loved her. But in the end, it will be up to Charlotte, under the assumed name Sherlock Holmes, to challenge society’s expectations and match wits against an unseen mastermind. Nevertheless, she forges a way for herself.  This series is intended for adults or older teens (16+).

Sherry Thomas turns the story of the renowned Sherlock Holmes upside down…
