In addition to a change in appearance, our new website also contains some brand new content. One example of this is the Special Collections page. The Dundee Library has four different special collections and that page provides a list of the materials available in each collection. Here is a more in-depth look at the first two collections:
In honor of today being the 139th anniversary of the formation of the Bell Telephone Company, I thought I’d start with the collection of local directories. This collection contains many telephone directories and city directories, ranging from 1908 to 2015. The directories cover a variety of areas in northeastern Kane County and southeastern McHenry County. The largest part of this collection would be the historical Illinois Bell directories (pictured), which range from 1908 to 1988. These directories can be useful for local history research or even genealogical research, especially if you are looking for information on local businesses.
This collection is made up of yearbooks from Dundee Community High School, Irving Crown High School, and Dundee-Crown High School (Dundee Community H.S. and Irving Crown H.S. combined into one school in 1983 called Dundee-Crown H.S.). The yearbooks range from 1914 to 2009. Some of the yearbooks are also available in digital form on the Ancestry Plus database. The yearbooks are an excellent resource for genealogical research and local history research, especially if you are looking for photographs of someone.
These two collections are important because they provide a great deal of information relating to the history of the Dundee area. It is important to us that we preserve these items so we can keep these local resources available for our community. If you want more information about these collections or have any questions, please feel free to stop by the Information Services desk at the Dundee Library, call 847-428-3661 and press 3, or email us at LibraryHelp@frvpld.info.
