Switch from OverDrive to Libby by May 1

On May 1, the OverDrive app will be discontinued. We encourage you to make the switch to Libby, OverDrive’s newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, with the same goal of connecting you to your library and to your favorite books, audiobooks, and magazines. Here is how to make the switch...

1.  Download the Libby app to your device.

2.  Find your library and sign in. For FRVPLD patrons, you will use North Suburban Digital Consortium. When you open Libby, you’ll be guided through simple setup steps to find your library and sign in with your card.

3.  Sync your OverDrive wish list. Once you’re signed in, you’ll be prompted to sync your OverDrive wish list from an in-app notification. Learn more about syncing your OverDrive wish list to Libby.

4.  Start reading and listening. Browse your library and find something new to borrow, or start reading the current loans on your Shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my current loans and holds appear in Libby?

Yes, your current loans and holds from the OverDrive app will be added to Libby as soon as you add your library card.

Note: Reading progress and bookmarks from the OverDrive app won't sync to Libby when you switch. You may want to finish your current loans before switching or make a note of your progress and manually pick up where you left off in Libby.

Will I still get notifications for holds?

Yes, you can set up and manage push notifications (for the Libby mobile app) or email notifications (for libbyapp.com). You can get notifications for available holds, expiring loans, new magazine issues released, and more.

Click here for step by step instructions to manage notifications.

Can I view my borrowing history in Libby? Will my borrowing history from the OverDrive app transfer?

Your reading history from the OverDrive app will not transfer to Libby. We recommend exporting your history from your library collection or your list of downloads in the OverDrive app for your own records.

Why is this happening now?

OverDrive launched the Libby app in 2017 with the goal of creating a simple and intuitive library app that builds on the core experience from the OverDrive app. They closely reviewed what was working with the OverDrive app and what could be improved. During this time, they didn't want to interrupt the experience for users, so the two apps have both been available.

Thanks to feedback from librarians and readers like you, Libby is now a great app for everyone and there's no longer a reason to have two apps that do the same thing. If you've enjoyed using the OverDrive app, we really hope you'll love Libby.

As always, we are here to help. If you need assistance with Overdrive or Libby, call us at (847) 428-3661, email libraryhelp@frvpld.info, or stop by in person at the Dundee Library Info Services Desk. You can also make an appointment! Use this link to Request a One-on-One Tech appointment.
